Here are 3 key reasons why it’s important for our young ones to learn to be respectful:
1. Helps them build feelings of trust, safety and well-being
Teaching respect in the classroom is crucial for supporting the educational success of our students. The bridge to gaining the trust of the people around us is built by respect, and trust is a valuable commodity. Students—particularly children and teenagers—often learn to reciprocate respect, empathy, and other positive attributes by way of a strong example.
Learning this important skill will help our children develop into kind, considerate members of society.
2. Teaches them the value of acceptance
Respect means that we accept people for who they are, even when they’re different from us or we don’t necessarily agree with them. Respectful individuals do not stick to their preconceived thoughts, jump into conclusions, or impose their thoughts on others.
It’s important to teach out students that respecting and appreciating differences is crucial for creating a safe and inclusive classroom (and society) that makes everyone feel safe and welcome.
3. Allows them to receive respect from others
Being respected by important people in their lives allows our students to grow up learning how to be respectful toward others as well! Learning how to be at the receiving end of respect is crucial in educating our young that they are valued and that they matter tremendously. It also helps provide an example for them to follow.

Respectful relationships education focuses on teaching students how to form safe, positive and respectful relationships across a wide range of social situations.
