Our PlayFACTO School Positive Education Value of the Month is none other than Empathy! Empathy is the ability to understand and experience the feelings of others, and to respond in helpful ways. Some children seem to develop empathy more naturally than others, but all children need to be taught this critical skill.
1. Why is empathy a central component in Positive Education?
Children who are empathic will be better able to cope with conflict and difficult social situations.
Children who are empathic will be less likely to engage in bullying behaviour, and more likely to jump in and help a friend or peer who is being bullied.
Children who are empathic are more likely to grow into well- adjusted adults with adaptive coping skills.
2. Building a positive education classroom culture
Demonstrating empathy in the classroom allows teachers to recognise the feelings of their students, and helps students care for their friends, play well with others, and learn to trust those around them. As a result, children become more confident in their relationships resulting in security, positioning students to be ready to learn.
3. Empathy strengthens community
Empathy sets students up to deepen relationships with their current classmates. Increased empathy can decrease bullying and aggression among kids and make them kinder and more inclusive toward classmates. Students who are empathetic are also more cooperative in class, have better relationships with their teachers and peers, and are more engaged in school. This helps strengthen the sense of community in the classroom.
4. Empathy prepares students to be leaders of the future
Great leadership also requires demonstrating empathy. It is appreciating another person’s viewpoint and being able to engage in a healthy debates that build better solutions. Great leadership requires a myriad of skills and empathy tops the list of what leaders must strive to get right.
